About Vasant Green Fennel Seeds (Saunf, Green Variyali)
Vasant Green Fennel Seeds are whole saunf with a green colour, packed by Vasant Masala in a 400g pack. Green fennel is the kind most Indian families keep in a small bowl near the dining table, and it is just as useful inside the kitchen as outside it.
Fennel seeds have a sweet, cooling, anise-like flavour and a fresh smell that comes out as soon as you crush a few between your fingers. In Gujarat it is called variyali, in Hindi saunf, in Bengal mouri and in Tamil Nadu sombu. Lightly roasted, the seeds turn nutty and a little more fragrant. The 400g pack is a comfortable size for families who refill the mukhwas bowl often and also cook with saunf through the week, and whole seeds keep their fragrance well until you are ready to crush or grind them for a recipe.
Many homes serve saunf on its own or mixed with dhana dal and mishri as mukhwas after meals. In cooking it goes into the tadka for Bengali panch phoron style dishes, Kashmiri gravies, achar, and sweet dishes like kheer and malpua. A pinch crushed into masala chai adds a pleasant sweetness, and ground saunf is used in many gravies and snacks.
Masala365 is an authorised Vasant Masala distributor in Kandivali West. We deliver Vasant saunf across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, and customers in other parts of India can place an order on WhatsApp inquiry.
