About Vasant Turmeric Powder (Haldi Powder)

Vasant Turmeric Powder is made from turmeric sourced from Sangli in Maharashtra, one of the best known turmeric markets in India. It is processed in hygienic conditions and ground into a smooth, bright yellow powder for everyday cooking.

Haldi has a warm, earthy and slightly bitter taste that rounds off the other spices in a dish, and it gives dal, sabzi and rice their familiar golden colour. It is usually the first powder to go into the hot oil after the tadka, and only a small amount is needed. Marathi homes call it halad powder, Hindi speakers say haldi pisi hoi, and Bengali kitchens know it as halder powder.

Use a teaspoon or less in dal, khichdi, kadhi, sabzis and curries, in the batter for pakodas and dhokla, and in marinades for fish and chicken. It goes into lemon and mango pickles, poha, upma and pulao, and into haldi doodh at night in many homes. In the south, the same spice is manjal podi in Tamil, pasupu podi in Telugu and arisina pudi in Kannada, and in Karnataka it may also be sold as haladi gunda.

Available in 100g, 200g, 500g and 1kg packs. Masala365, an authorised Vasant Masala distributor in Kandivali West, delivers across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, and takes orders from the rest of India through WhatsApp inquiry.

How to use

  • Add a quarter to one teaspoon to hot oil after the tadka, before the vegetables.
  • Mix into besan batter for pakodas or dhokla.
  • Rub on fish or chicken with salt and chilli before frying.
  • Stir a pinch into warm milk for haldi doodh.
