About Vasant Black Salt Powder (Kala Namak, Sanchal)
Vasant Natural Black Salt Powder is the ground form of kala namak, called sanchal in Gujarati and Marathi homes. Vasant's black salt comes from sources in India and Pakistan and is sold here as a fine powder in a 100g pack, ready to sprinkle.
Black salt tastes quite different from table salt. It has a sharp, slightly sulphurous flavour that many people describe as egg-like, which softens once it is mixed with other spices. The reddish brown to pinkish colour comes from the minerals naturally present in the salt, including iron and sulphur. In Punjab it is often called kala noon, and in Tamil Nadu nalla uppu.
This is the salt that gives chaat its familiar tang. Sprinkle it over bhel, sev puri, fruit chaat, cucumber and onion salad, or roasted peanuts and makhana. Stir a pinch into nimbu pani, jaljeera, chaas or a glass of cold soda, and add it to boondi raita. It is also a regular part of homemade chaat masala and pani puri water. Because the flavour is strong, add it at the end and taste as you go, often a pinch is enough.
